Castle Gardens, Malton:
Interpretation Board
Work has been carried out at Castle Garden in Malton for several years with the aim of opening up this derelict area of land, which lies off Orchard Fields and behind The Lodge Hotel, to create a public park. The site has a fascinating history and has remains underlying it from Malton Castle, a Roman fort and a Jacobean prodigy house that was demolished in the 17th century.
The garden will formally open to the public this summer and will feature a series of interpretation boards to inform visitors of the history of the site and the flora and fauna that may be seen there.
The artwork for these interpretation boards has been produced at two workshops on site, facilitated by artists from Rural Arts. Approximately one hundred and fifty people of all ages dropped in to the workshops and were invited to explore the site and encouraged to sketch or paint the flora and fauna that they saw there.
The artwork produced was then collated by Rural Arts' graphic designer and the overall design of the boards set out ready for manufacture.
